Where did we get the bible?
Let's face it; the bible didn't drop out of the sky. In fact, many Christians don't realize that the bible as we now know it, the Old and New Testaments, took thousands of years to write and compile...and the first printed bible didn't come into being until the year 1450. After Guttenberg invented the printing press in Germany, the first book he pubished was the bible, a Latin Version, called the Vulgate. The Vulgate consisted of forty-six Old Testament books and twenty-seven New Testament books. It was compiled by St Jerome in the year 405 under the direction of Pope Damascus I and included both the proto-canonical books accepted by all Jews and the deutero-canonical books, which were accepted by the Jews in ancient Alexandira, Egypt. Protestant bibles of today do not include the deutero-canonical books, but Catholic and Orthodox bibles do. It's interesting to note that the New Testament books, which are not disputed by Protestants, makes references to these deutero-canonical books multiple times, including Jesus himself. Read the text references in the following link: http://www.scripturecatholic.com/deuterocanon.html
Also interesting to note in the books of Maccabees, two of the deutero-canonical books, the story of the desecration of the Jewish Temple in Jeruselem is told. No one disputes that this happened--it's the reason that Jews celebrate Hannakuh today, a celebration of the restoration and re-dedication of the Temple after Judas Maccabee recaptured it from Antiochus IV Epiphanes of Syria.
